As of 2012, the state of Florida had a population of more than 19.3 million people; and 18.2 percent of its citizens are aged 65 or older. This places Florida number in the nation in terms of the highest percentage of senior citizens. As Florida has long been known as one of the top retirement states in the nation, this should come as no surprise.
Given its high percentage of seniors and retirees, many Floridians depend on Social Security benefits to survive. While Social Security is paid to 90 percent of its senior population, only 69 percent of those who receive SSD or SSI benefits are retired. This suggests that a significant portion of the Social Security paid to Florida citizens consists of Social Security Disability insurance.
